The Weekly BAT + Podcast ep. 10 (Oct. 4, 2019) — Official release: 2-way wallets are here! BAT Rewards (ad earnings) can now be transferred into users’ Uphold accounts, Brave’s R&D team publishes “VPN-0” (blog), Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) wins latest Brave Ads Grant
Release: 2-way wallets are here! BAT Rewards (ad earnings) can now be transferred into users’ Uphold accounts!
With today’s updated Brave browser for desktop (0.69), Brave users can choose to transfer Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) out of their Brave Rewards wallet and convert the tokens to many digital assets and fiat currencies, after completing a verification process with digital money platform Uphold. Previously, the Brave browser wallet was unidirectional, and its sole purpose was to anonymously and securely contribute to online publishers of the user’s choosing.

R&D: Brave’s R&D team publishes “VPN-0”, the first distributed virtual private network (dVPN) that offers a privacy preserving traffic authorization & validation mechanism
Distributed virtual private networks (dVPNs) are a new form of VPN with no central authority. In a dVPN, users are both VPN clients and relay/exit nodes as in a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network. While dVPNs make strong privacy claims, they also carry the risk that a user will inadvertently have their machine used to transmit potentially harmful or illegal network traffic. Several incidents have been reported [2] where unaware dVPN users have been (ab)used as exit nodes.
We have integrated VPN⁰ with BitTorrent’s DHT (Mainline) and ProtonVPN, a popular VPN provider. We demonstrate the feasibility of VPN⁰ and also benchmark its performance with respect to DHT lookup, VPN tunnel setup, and zero-knowledge traffic attestation.
This research was conducted by Dr. Matteo Varvello (Performance Researcher at Brave), Iñigo Querejeta-Azurmendi (intern at Brave), Dr. Panagiotis Papadopoulos (Security Researcher at Brave), Gonçalo Pestana (Research Engineer at Brave) and Dr. Ben Livshits (Brave’s Chief Scientist).

The Giving Block: “Lupus Foundation of America Wins Latest Brave Ads Grant” (blog)
This week, Brave Software, the company behind the fast, privacy-oriented Brave browser, combined with a blockchain-based digital advertising platform, sponsored the Walk to End Lupus Now event in San Francisco, and awarded them the third Brave Ads Grant.
Brave Ads are opt-in, privacy-preserving, and users who consent to viewing them are rewarded with 70% of the ad revenue share in Basic Attention Tokens (BAT). As part of the program, the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) will receive approximately $10,000 in free advertisements per month to engage with Brave’s user base, which has a confirmed interest in a rewarding ad experience. The LFA has also verified its website to become a Verified Publisher with Brave so visitors can tip the LFA with BAT.

Why big ISPs aren’t happy about Google’s plans for encrypted DNS
Widespread adoption of DoH would limit ISPs’ ability to both monitor and modify customer queries. It wouldn’t necessarily eliminate this ability, since ISPs could still use these techniques for customers who use the ISP’s own DNS servers. But if customers switched to third-party DNS servers—either from Google or one of its various competitors—then ISPs would no longer have an easy way to tell which sites customers were accessing.
