Weekly highlights

BAT/Brave Joins the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) ecosystem to accelerate DeFi adoption: BAT now available as wrapped-BAT on BSC

Basic Attention Token (BAT), the native token to Brave privacy browser, explores multiple blockchains as a part of its Themis initiative and is now also available on Binance Smart Chain (BSC) as wrapped BAT. BAT holders can use numerous bridges that connect Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain to participate in the DeFi ecosystem on BSC.

Brave’s browser wallet currently supports Ethereum and BSC through a configuration change in the wallet, but Brave is planning to preconfigure support for Binance Smart Chain later this year. This will allow users to access BSC without downloading additional apps, creating new wallets, and updating configurations in the Brave wallet. Given the low transaction costs on BSC, Brave is also exploring the use of BSC to enable P2P tipping within the Brave browser.

The Markup: Brave Sr Privacy Researcher in What’s Up with the Apple App Store’s Privacy Changes? — “The state of people’s privacy on iOS devices will be dramatically better than it is today.”

You may have noticed an influx of ads for furniture on your Instagram feed after looking for a new chair for your work-from-home setup, or promoted posts for a coffee shop that you’ve only ever walked past. Your phone’s apps collect and share a lot of information—from your location, to your browsing habits, to your search history.

[…]

“This is actually a very good thing for most people,” Pete Snyder, senior privacy researcher at Brave Software and the co-chair of the W3C Privacy Interest Group, said. “The state of people’s privacy on iOS devices will be dramatically better than it is today.”

Wired: Google and the Age of Privacy Theater

Google got some good press a few weeks ago when it announced in a blog post that it would be moving forward with its plans to remove third-party cookies from the Chrome browser. The move had been announced early last year as part of the company’s Privacy Sandbox initiative, but now Google has clarified that it didn’t intend to replace those cookies with some equivalent, substitute technology. Other browsers, including Safari and Firefox, already block third-party trackers, but given that Chrome is the most popular browser in the world, by far, with a market share in the 60-something percent range, the news was widely billed as a big step toward the end of letting companies target ads by tracking people around the internet. “Google plans to stop selling ads based on individuals’ browsing across multiple websites” is how The Wall Street Journal put it.

[…]

“If your reference point is what Chrome allows now, this is better,” said Peter Snyder, a senior privacy researcher at Brave, a privacy-focused browser. “But if your reference point is what any other browser allows, or what any reasonable definition of privacy really means, this is awful. It solves an extremely narrow problem: Right now, the way behavioral advertising is done is that you build a list of every site I visit and then target ads based on that. That is a privacy harm, but it isn’t the definition of privacy itself.”

Gala Games: Wine for the Win!

Each Town Star game comes with plenty of important strategic decisions, especially if you’re aiming for one of the top spots, because no builder can ever build everything. For the most organized and effective builds, you must first decide on a focus by setting specific goals, then spend the duration of the game achieving those goals in the most efficient ways you can manage.

Some Town Star players like to focus on the uniform hustle, which involves expert crafting with cotton, wool and lumber. Others aim to make rows of cakeries, from which the aromas of sweet virtual delicacies fill the air. Still others strive to become metalheads by mastering the crafting and export of coveted and valued blue steel.
